Eve ‘N You Can:
Understand why your TOPS Software is running so slow

IMAGINE THIS:
Your computer’s storage hard drive is like a “bookshelf” & the programs & information in your computer’s storage hard drive are like the “books”. Next to your “bookshelf” is a “desk”. The “desk” in this analogy is the “desktop” of your computer.

NOW- you may have a HUGE “bookshelf” full of “books” but just because all of the “books” fit on the “bookshelf”, doesn’t mean you can fit them all on the “desktop” at once… you’ll break the “desk”… meaning, you’ll freeze up your computer or it might crash…broken “desk”.

Have you ever played a game called JENGA? Or seen it played? Or know what I’m talking about??? http://www.hasbro.com/games/family-games/jenga/ Well, another way to look at the computer’s storage hard drive is to imagine it as a game of JENGA.

In the beginning… it’s a perfect cube of tightly packed information & programs to make it run… but as you take and install & delete programs & files it’s like taking the little JENGA piece and pulling it from the middle & putting it back on top… if you never stop, eventually your JENGA tower (your computer’s storage hard drive) will CRASH.

Do you know many different types of computers there are? NO? I didn’t either so I looked it up on the internet.

Answer (Wiki Answers)? This question is far too broad:

  • In chip architectures: There are several in current uses, but there are 3 that are most common. Intel's x86 and AMD's x64 are used in almost all modern PCs.
  • There are IBM's PowerPC chips such as the ones in use in old Macintoshes, Play stations and other consoles.
  • Then there are ARM processors used on mobile devices such as the iPhone and iPod Touch, and most Smartphone and handhelds.
  • In hardware configurations: There are almost unlimited combinations of hardware that would work together.
  • In basic designs: There are desktops, servers, integrated machines, notebooks, tablet computers and subnotebooks and other miscellaneous devices.
  • In brands: There are around 200 main brands that sell computers, though they mainly buy parts from other manufacturers, assemble them and install an operating system on them.

MY POINT IS - your computer is not the exact same one as the person next to you or down the hall or even across town. And on top of that, add all the gadgets & programs & music & downloads & toolbars we tend to add & delete too, in order to make our workstations even MORE unique… and then all the files we forget that are saved to our hard drive & maybe later delete as well that are taking up space… and of course those who NEVER run system maintenance on their computer… and they wonder why it crashes???

In closing I’ll leave you with my plea to PLEASE do maintenance to your computers and networks. If you have data and owner history from before the year 2005… PURGE it!!! It’ll speed things up!!! If you don’t know how, CALL ME at 800-899-5689 and I’ll tell you how to make a backup and clean your TOPS program up!!! *Customers running with a low amount of memory will likely experience slowdown when accessing large files and accessing data files over a network. TOPS highly recommends that you install the recommended amount of memory. TOPS claims no responsibility for slowdown due to insufficient resources.

*Please Note: We do not recommend running TOPS over a wireless connection due to the fact that it may cause unpredictable results or data loss from frequent network drops.

* WINDOWS VISTA: We have been able to successfully run a fully functional version of TOPS in both Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate editions. It has come to our attention that a number of new computers being sold with the Home Basic edition of Windows Vista pre-installed do not provide administrative rights to the default user. In order for any TOPS products to be correctly installed, the user must have administrative rights to Windows and the system registry on the machine. Vista Home Basic Edition is not a server operating system, and does NOT work well when set up in this manner. For this reason, TOPS strongly recommends AGAINST Windows Vista Home Basic Edition for any installation of TOPS Professional™ For further information please see Networking & Installation.
